Bernard O’Kane

Bernard O’Kane is currently Professor of Art and Architecture at the American University in Cairo, where he has worked since 1980. Prior to this, he was Assistant Director of the British Institute of Persian Studies in Tehran. Dr. O’Kane has been a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University and is currently a member of the Advisory Board of Muqarnas and the Editorial Board of the Islamic Art and Architecture series (Mazda Publishers), in addition to serving as a Nominator for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. His recent books include Treasures of Islam (2007), Treasures of the Islamic Museums in Cairo (edited, 2006), The Iconography of Islamic Art:  Studies in Honour of Robert Hillenbrand (edited, 2005), and Early Persian Painting: Kalila and Dimna Manuscripts of the Late-Fourteenth Century (2003), which won the Book of the Year Prize of Iran. He has two publications due out shortly: The Appearance of Persian on Islamic Works of Art and Creswell Photographs Re-examined: New Perspectives on Islamic Architecture (edited). Dr. O’Kane received his Ph.D. from Edinburgh University in 1982.
