Travel & Lodging

Córdoba is a city of approximately 350,000 located in Andalusia in southern Spain. The capital of Muslim Spain in the medieval period, the city contains many significant monuments of Islamic art and architecture, such as the Great Mosque of Córdoba, begun in 750 CE, and the ruins of Medina Azahara, a 10th-century palace just outside of the city, as well as a fine collection of Islamic art in the Archaeological Museum. Granada, site of the Alhambra, is several hours’ drive from Córdoba.

And Diverse Are Their Hues: Color in Islamic Art and Culture will be held at two locations in Córdoba. The keynote address on November 2 will be given at Córdoba University’s Rectory Building (street address: Avenida Medina Azahara, no. 5), an historic building located on campus, just outside the walls of the old town. Panel presentations on November 3 and 4 will take place at the Palacio Congresos (street address: Calle Torrijos 10), a conference center located in the old town. The two venues are walking distance from each other and from many hotels.

GETTING TO AND FROM CÓRDOBA
Córdoba has no airport. Most Symposium attendees will find that their easiest route into the city from abroad will be to fly to Madrid Barajas International Airport and then transfer to Madrid’s Atocha Train Station, where they can take a 1.5-hour high-speed (AVE) train to Córdoba. To purchase AVE train tickets online, attendees should consult their local travel agents or use an online service, such as RailEurope. To transfer between Madrid Barajas International Airport and Atocha Train Station, it is suggested that attendees take a taxi as it is a short ride, although it is possible to take the Metro.

LODGING IN CÓRDOBA
Because all Symposium events will be held in or near the old town, it is recommended that attendees find lodging there. The following hotels are located in the old town:

Hospes Palacio del Bailio *****
NH Amistad Córdoba ****
El Conquistador Hotel ****
Hotel Maimónides ***
Hotel Hacienda Posada de Vallinka ***
Hotel La Hospedería de El Churrasco ***

The Parador La Arruzafa **** is located outside of the old town, but has a large parking lot for any attendees who will be driving.

Please note that this is a list only, and in no way serves as an endorsement or recommendation of the above hotels. Attendees are fully responsible for choosing and reserving their own accommodations in Córdoba.
